This Sunday, May 16, marks the opening of the Fresh 52 Farmers & Artisan Market at Sansone Park Place on S. Eastern Ave., in front of Black Pepper Grill.
Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and plans are to be open every Sunday, year round.
The marketing literature for this attraction promises “fresh local fruits and vegetables, modern crafts, and local artisans.”
Did you happen to see the following notice in the March issue of the Spirit magazine?
As I understand it, Debbie Landry, our new outside sales representative for the Spirit, includes, as part of her sales pitch, an invitation for advertisers to offer special discounts or deals to our residents when they deal with those advertisers and present their SCA member ID card.
In scanning the March issue, I saw ads containing the discount logo on pages 3, 7, 20, 45, 50 and 54. No doubt more advertisers will participate in the program as they come on board.
This is in addition to standard resident discounts built into some of the ads, such as the 10-percent discount at the UPS Store in the Smith’s Plaza on Eastern Ave.
Do you own an iPhone? Even if you don’t, are you a cell-phone user who might be curious about some of the things you can do with one of these marvelous gadgets?
Roz and I have had our iPhones for a while now, and I continue to be amazed at the increased functionality –and entertainment value- provided by this revolution in cell-phone technology, which has sent competitors scrambling to compete.
When I’m not sure about whether my readers have enough interest in a topic, I come to you for input on whether you really want the information. You may recall I did this with our survey that told me a majority of you did not want to see classified ads on the blog.
So ….I’m asking you to tell me if you’d like to see a lengthy article about some of the things one can do with an iPhone. This is not a request to tell me that you don’t want the information, because I doubt that a majority of you would be interested. But if enough of you –say, a dozen or more- let me know by comments here or by personal e-mail that you’d like to see a detailed iPhone article, then I would write one.

A blog reader who is a newer resident in the community contacted me for recommendations on a good landscaping company.
Please offer your recommendations here if you'd like to give some suggestions to this resident.
To start it off: We used Rainbow. We found them reliable and their prices fair, but I can't say that they are the best. I think one thing that helps a homeowner to achieve a satisfactory result is to have a good idea of what you want to accomplish, and then see how the landscaper proposes to execute the concept. But others may want to sit back and say to the landscaper they are considering, "Present me with a concept that will wow me."
I also suggested to the resident that she consider registering for the community website and posting a request on the site's message board.
The new Trader Joe's had not even been open an hour this morning (Aug. 16) when resident Carl Weinstein sent me the first report. Here is what Carl wrote:
I attended the grand opening of Trader Joe's in the KMart shopping center mall this Thursday at 9 AM. About 100 people were waiting to get in and there was a calypso band playing out front I saw many familiar Anthem faces at the opening.
The store, being brand new, was ultra clean and ultra organized. The same products found at the Sunset Road store were found at this new store, only more of it and presented a bit better. Prices appear to be in line with the other store. As is typical, some of Trader Joe's prices are actually lower than regular supermarkets. For instance, the Hebrew National salami chub is about $1 less than Von's price for the same size. Also, significantly, they carry a line of Aaron's Kosher poultry and beef prewrapped to assure kosher standards and lo and behold, the price is about $1 less per pound than the kosher market at our new Albertson's.
It looks like a fun place to shop in and where you will always come away with more than you intended to buy.

I met numerous SCA residents there during my 30-minute visit. The store looks to be about the same size as the one on Sunset. There are many friendly employees, and while there were opening-day lines at the registers, they were nothing like the long lines at Whole Foods Market on the day their local store opened last year.
Trader Joe's is a wonderful addition to our local shopping scene.
The new Anthem Albertsons supermarket is celebrating its grand opening, and your intrepid reporter plus spouse made the short trip over there to gather some first impressions and collect some photos for you. The store (click on photo for larger image) is in the new Anthem shopping plaza at Bicentennial Parkway, adjacent to Anthem Highlands.
I'm a supermarket junkie, and this store certainly offers the best that you will find under the Albertsons brand name. It is very well stocked, of course, as you'd expect from a new market, and the variety available under its roof is really great. The produce section is excellent, and the market offers a good selection of prepared foods that you can take home and just heat & serve.
Store hours are daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.
One feature that sets the new Albertsons apart from almost any other supermarket in the area is the Kosher Marketplace, which includes a full-service deli, a meat shop, a fish shop, and kosher breads and cakes. There is also kosher wine, dairy and frozen departments, and an aisle of foods from Israel.
Kosher food usually commands a premium price, but there are many Gentiles and non-observant Jews who insist that the higher prices are justified by higher quality. Stop by and decide for yourself.
