This week’s “Anthem Alive” is filled with a collection of wonderful stories suitable for the holiday period, starting off with an inspiring profile of a Sun City Anthem resident and her project to benefit area children in need.
My Very Own Dreams is the charitable effort of Susan Stern, and reporter Kathy Matson (right, below) visited Susan to learn what the project is all about.

Working out of her home and aided by volunteers who also work out of their homes, Susan produces unique pillowcases that are given to children living in homeless shelters, who are going into foster care, and are in other needy circumstances.
Susan tells reporter Matson that she was tired of seeing displaced children, already stripped of so much of their dignity and self-esteem, having to tote around their meager belongings in black trash bags, so she came up with the idea for the colorful pillowcases.
Working with foundation grants, My Very Own Dreams has produced more than 4,000 pillowcases so far. The pillowcases are produced with a unique sewing method that makes them extra durable and suitable for a variety of uses.

Susan has a great need for volunteers to help produce the pillowcases. She provides all the materials, and all that is required is your own sewing machine and a desire to help needy children.
To inquire about volunteering, call Susan Stern at 614-1818 or e-mail her at sjstern@cox.net.

One of the most popular SCA activities of the holiday season is the annual Jingle Bell Walk, and this year was no exception. A large number of residents, many accompanied by their four-footed friends, turned out for the walk this year, followed by an enjoyable continental breakfast at Independence Center. Channel 99 cameras captured highlights.

Many SCA residents responded to an invitation to feature their holiday-decorated homes on “Anthem Alive,” and in in this segment you’ll see some of the best of them, as compiled by Channel 99’s Margaret and Kyoshi Uematsu.

Does this face look familiar to you?

Love him or hate him, John Barr is easily among the most recognizable personalities in Southern Nevada, mainly because of his zany television commercials for Findlay Toyota.

More than just a TV pitchman, Barr is actually the general sales manager for Findlay Toyota, and reporter David Berman sat down with him at the dealership for a wide-ranging interview.
In this segment, you will learn about Barr’s British heritage; the origin of his signature spiked hair style; his music and professional sports background. And he is not bashful about discussing the past year’s challenges in the automotive industry and with Toyota in particular.
Reporter’s Note: Say hello to the personable John Barr if you see him in the area. A resident of Anthem Highlands, he is found frequently shopping at the Bicentennial Albertson’s supermarket.

Aren’t most of us old enough to remember the days when we picked up the phone and heard a live operator say, “Information.”

Resident Philosopher Lois Krashin certainly remembers, as she relates personal “information” anecdotes to close the program with her Something to Think About feature.
